The picture heading into free agency next week is a lot clearer now as the Habs announced on Monday afternoon that defenceman Andrei Markov has signed a new three year deal to remain with the club.
Even though the Habs have a fair amount of talent at centre, it is a position that many are hoping that changes will be made this offseason.
The Habs will be on the hunt for a new assistant coach as it was announced on Saturday afternoon that Gerard Gallant was leaving the Canadiens to become the head coach of the Florida Panthers.
It wasn’t that long ago that the left wing position was an area of extreme weakness for the Habs.
Continuing with addressing defensive depth as we did in our last Draft Options column, Montreal may want to keep an eye on the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen defenseman Travis Sanheim.
Montreal’s defence corps has undergone some changes in recent years and it appears that this may very well be the case again in this offseason.
On Tuesday, the Habs took care of one of their restricted free agents, signing Dale Weise to a two year contract.
Defensive depth was a bit of a stumbling block for Montreal in the 2013-2014 season and while the cupboard isn’t bare, it wouldn’t hurt to keep to it stocked with some solid defensive talent.
With the draft and free agency now less than a month away, Marc Bergevin and his staff will be busy putting together their wish lists for who they want to draft and sign.
