Tomas Plekanec’s two year, $12 million extension last week came as a surprise to many. It was a pleasant surprise for our writers who all think it’s a good deal for both Plekanec and the Habs.
It was a winning week all around as the Habs took care of business in all three of their games to extend their season-long winning streak to six straight while the IceCaps were victorious in both of their home contests as well.
On Friday morning, the Habs locked up their longest-tenured forward for another two seasons as Tomas Plekanec inked an extension worth $12 million for a cap hit of $6 million. That represents a $1 million increase on his current contract.
After a strong start on the road, the Montreal Canadiens return to the friendly confines of the Bell Centre for their home opener tonight, welcoming the New York Rangers.
The Habs are now three for three in spoiling opponents’ home openers as on Tuesday, the Canadiens skated into Pittsburgh and came out with a 3-2 victory, extending their win streak to four straight games.
The Habs are off to a fine start to the 2015-16 season as they reeled off three straight road wins in the opening week. St. John’s also got their campaign underway on the road and managed a win in one of their two games. With Zack Kassian gone indefinitely, many have suggested that the Prust-Kassian trade is now a steal for Vancouver; my Final Thought suggests why this still isn’t the case.
The Habs were looking to spoil their second home opener of the season on Sunday night as they took on Ottawa. They were able to do that on the backs of Tomas Plekanec and Mike Condon as the Canadiens improved to 3-0 with a 3-1 victory.
