The NHL announced the protection lists for all 30 teams in advance of Wednesday’s Vegas Expansion Draft. Here is what Montreal’s list looks like.
It had been expected for a little while but the Habs have officially moved Nathan Beaulieu, sending him to Buffalo in exchange for Buffalo’s 3rd rounder (68th overall) in next Saturday’s draft.

The Habs have needed top six help for a while now and they took a big step towards improving that, acquiring Jonathan Drouin and a conditional sixth round pick from Tampa Bay for Mikhail Sergachev and a conditional second rounder.
The Jonathan Drouin trade wasn’t the only thing on the table for the Habs on Thursday as they announced the re-signing of winger Charles Hudon to a two year deal. The contract carries a cap hit of $650,000.
Although he underachieved considerably this season and has a pricey cap hit, there’s still a case to be made that Tomas Plekanec is worth protecting from the Expansion Draft.
Montreal’s centre depth at the end of the season was, to put it nicely, lousy. Unfortunately for the team, it’s an issue for the other areas of the organization as well.
While many in Montreal have soured on Nathan Beaulieu, to expose him to the expansion draft would be foolhardy.
