The Canadiens recently passed the quarter point of the 2019-20 season so it’s time to release the HabsWorld first quarter report cards. We begin this series with the Habs defencemen and goalies.

Despite a solid first period, the Habs and Carey Price were unable to focus on the defensive side of the puck. Against a team of the Bruins’ calibre, they paid the price as Boston exploited this lack of discipline to the tune of an 8-1 final score on Tuesday night.

The Habs had a chance to bank some much-needed points in the standings against a trio of non-playoff teams. However, they failed to take advantage of the weaker schedule as they only managed a single point while ending the week on a low note.

Fresh off a disappointing loss to Ottawa, the Habs were looking to get back in the win column as they hosted the Rangers on Saturday night. They got off to a blistering start before collapsing terribly, blowing a four-goal lead to lose 6-5.

It was a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde game as the Habs came out buzzing on Wednesday night, but never could capitalize. With only a 1-0 lead at the midway point of the game, the Sens were able to generate momentum and got the game to overtime where they scored to pick up the 2-1 victory.

For the second Tuesday night in a row, the Canadiens were taking on Columbus, The Habs dominated for large parts of this game but it was not meant to be as they fell 5-2 to the Blue Jackets.

While the week ended on a bit of a down (and confusing) note, it was still a strong showing for the Habs as they picked up five of a possible six points.

The Canadiens were looking to win their fourth straight game when they hosted Devils on Saturday. Goals late in periods plagued the Habs again, as New Jersey won a penalty-filled affair in overtime by a 4-3 score.

The Habs were facing a tough test on Friday night as they rolled into Capital One Arena to take on the league-leading Washington Capitals. Montreal had a dominating performance, scoring four goals in the second period en route to a 5-2 victory.
