Marc Bergevin made several key additions over the offseason and those moves have led to plenty of justified optimism after Montreal had a strong first quarter of the regular season.

The first quarter of the season has come and gone which means it’s time for our report cards to return. As always, we begin with a look at the goaltenders and defencemen.

It turns out playing a team other than Ottawa wasn’t enough to cure Montreal’s woes as they limped through the first two games of the week before eking out a win on Saturday to at least hit their off week on a winning note.

After a sluggish start to his season, the Habs have placed Paul Byron on waivers for the purpose of assigning him to the taxi squad.

Remember when the Habs outplayed the Leafs for most of an opening night loss? Karma happened on Saturday as the Leafs dominated the entire first half of the game but Carey Price kept his team in the game for that long. The Habs woke up in the second half of the game and snuck away with a 2-1 win over the top team in the division.

There weren’t many positives to take from Thursday’s game as the Habs dropped yet another home game, this time a 3-0 decision to the Edmonton Oilers. Jake Allen kept the team in the game longer than they deserved to be in it.

After a couple of practice days to start the week, the Habs were back at it on Wednesday night as they hosted Toronto. While many were expecting a high-scoring affair, it was a tight-checking affair that the Maple Leafs took 4-2.

While Montreal scuffled through their last two games of the week, they were still able to come away with three of four victories to keep themselves in the battle for top spot in the North Division.

On Saturday afternoon, the Habs looked to avenge their Thursday night loss as they travelled to Ottawa for a rematch against the Senators. It wasn’t a pretty game but they did just enough to pull off the 2-1 victory.
