The infirmary to start the season is getting a little smaller as the Habs announced on Thursday that they have placed defenceman Gustav Olofsson on waivers. This comes on the heels of suffering a shoulder injury at the beginning of training camp.
The Habs narrowly missed the playoffs last season and have opted for continuity and the hope of continued development over a big splash to try to change that fate. Will that be enough to make the postseason in 2019-20?
Following Saturday’s win against Ottawa, Montreal had three cuts still to make. Two of those have come in the form of Charles Hudon and Charlie Lindgren who were placed on waivers on Sunday.
The Habs took a big step towards finalizing their roster as they announced that defencemen Karl Alzner and Xavier Ouellet plus forwards Matthew Peca, Phil Varone, and Dale Weise have been placed on waivers. They all cleared on Friday and were assigned to Laval.
For the second straight day, the Habs have pared down their training camp roster although only a pair of players are on their way to Laval.
The Habs made their first real set of cuts on Saturday in advance of their game against Ottawa. A total of 14 players were trimmed off the roster and have been assigned to Laval of the AHL.
The past few days have not been kind to the Habs on the injury front. The team announced that Ryan Poehling is out indefinitely with a concussion while Michael McCarron will miss six weeks with a groin injury.
There are some years where Montreal’s rookie crop isn’t all that interesting from a fantasy hockey perspective. This is not one of those years as quite a few prospects could make an impact.
While not every player on the Habs is worth a full-time roster spot in fantasy leagues, there are quite a few that could still be useful in certain situations.
The Habs have set their roster for training camp which gets underway on Thursday. While there weren’t any surprise invitees, some of the cuts from rookie camp may come as a bit of a surprise.
