With the rookie tournament beginning on Thursday, the Habs revealed their invite list on Sunday. Most of the names are already part of the organization but let’s take a look at the players that are there on tryouts.
It took longer than many expected but the Habs have signed their last remaining restricted free agent, announcing on Thursday that they’ve inked Cayden Primeau to a three-year, one-way contract.
Jesse Ylonen has shown a fair bit of promise in his first two seasons in North America. That said, it certainly feels like he has a lot on the line in 2022-23.
Brett Stapley’s time with the Canadiens hasn’t come to an end after all. Two weeks after the Habs gave up his NHL rights, Laval announced that they’ve signed the centre to a one-year deal.
A few years ago, the Habs were in good shape on the left wing. Since then, it has been an organizational weakness. Today, the Canadiens have some depth at the position although a lot of it is of the short-term variety.
The 2022 World Juniors have come to an end with four of Montreal’s prospects picking up medals. Some played well, others underwhelmed which leads to a mixture of grades in our end-of-tournament report card.
August 15th is quietly a day of some importance on the NHL calendar as it’s the day that NHL rights expire for some college prospects. The Habs have someone in that situation as Brett Stapley was not signed and thus becomes an unrestricted free agent.
The rescheduled 2022 World Junior Hockey Championship will run from August 9th through the 20th. Although several of Montreal’s top prospects won’t be attending, they will still have five players representing the organization in this event. As is tradition, we’ll keep track of their progress here.
After the World Juniors were postponed back in December, the make-up tournament is set to get underway next week and will feature several Montreal prospects although not necessarily the ones at the original version of the tournament.
The Habs have brought in plenty of defencemen in recent years to their system. The left side is the deeper of the two as Montreal has depth at that spot among their NHL options while several of their better prospects also play that side.
