With the arbitration deadline approaching, the Habs came to terms with Jacob de la Rose on a two-year contract worth a total of $1.8 million. Meanwhile, both Joel Armia and Phillip Danault filed for arbitration.
We’re still three months from the season starting but already the Habs are getting hit hard on the injury front. The team announced that Shea Weber underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus and will be out five-to-six months.
As always, there were plenty of signings of July 1st but this time, the Habs were largely on the sidelines. Our writers weigh in about what Montreal did and didn’t do at the beginning of free agency.
Before Montreal’s brief foray into free agency, they swung a deal to add Joel Armia from the Jets in exchange for basically just cap space. Our writers offer up their thoughts on the acquisition.
After adding some depth players in free agency, the Habs turned their focus to Laval, inking centre Michael Chaput to a two-year, two-way deal and winger Kenny Agostino to a one-year, two-way pact.
Montreal’s Sunday signing spree continues with the team announcing that they have signed Jesperi Kotkaniemi to a three-year, entry-level contract.
Centre depth appears to be a focus for the Habs in free agency. After inking Tomas Plekanec, the team has also added Matthew Peca on a two-year, $2.6 million contract.
As had been speculated earlier in the week, the Habs have inked defenceman Xavier Ouellet to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal is worth $700,000 in the NHL and guarantees $350,000 in total.
It’s a move that comes as no real surprise but the Habs are bringing back centre Tomas Plekanec on a one-year contract. The deal carries a base salary of $2.25 million and could be worth up to $3.5 million with incentives.
