The Habs took care of one of their pending restricted free agents on Friday, announcing that they’ve signed defenceman Jordan Harris to a two-year extension that carries a cap hit of $1.4 million.
In this next group of our prospect rankings, we look at several newcomers to the organization, including one that has some NHL experience but doesn’t appear likely to get much of a look with the Habs.
Before the All-Star break arrived, Laval had a pair of games last week against division-leading Toronto. With some reinforcements from the infirmary and the Habs, the Rocket picked up a split to hold onto the final play-in spot in the North.
Montreal’s prospect pool has gotten a lot deeper over the past year as a result of extra draft picks and veterans being moved out for prospects. As a result, this is the deepest we’ve gone in our rankings series. We begin with the bottom seven.
While the month of January wasn’t a successful one for the Habs, the same can’t be said for their prospects as several of them had standout performances, earning themselves a spot in our Three Stars.
January wasn’t a great month for the Habs when it came to getting victories (or avoiding injuries) but there certainly were some players who were able to stand out in a positive way. Who were their top performers of the month?
Last week was an opportunity for the Rocket as they were against teams behind them in the standings. They didn’t quite make the most of it but didn’t lose much ground either as they picked up a win and a pair of overtime losses.
It was only a matter of time before the season-ending injury to Cole Caufield weakened Montreal’s offence. That happened this past week as the Habs were only able to muster up five goals in three games with just a single point to show for it in the standings.
When a player is sent back to junior, it is difficult for an NHL team to recall them but it’s possible if enough emergency recalls are used. That’s the case for the Habs and they’ve opted to pull someone up from the junior ranks, recalling Owen Beck from Peterborough of the OHL.
