Canadiens Mid-season Top 20 – 9. Konstantin Korneev-
. (10th) Korneev moves up a spot after recently taking place in
his third World Junior Championship. After winning the gold in his first two
trips, this year did not go well for Team Russia, but Korneev was able to be the
leading scoring defensemen on his team, and has been a regular in the Russian
Super League for two seasons now, and is still only 19 years old. A late pick of
the 2002 draft, taken 275th overall, Korneev lacks in size, but makes
up for it in skill, hard work, and solid positioning.

2004 World Junior Championship at Helsinki – Taken in 2002
from the 9th round, 275th overall, Korneev made his third
and final trip to the World Junior Championship, taking home the gold in his
first two visits. This year Team Russia were not able to grab the gold or any
medal, but Korneev did have another good tournament, as he was tied for second
in assists overall, and he was the top scoring defensemen on his team, and was
tied for second in team scoring as well. Russia finished fifth overall as they
were able to beat Team Slovakia in the final game.

March 2004 – Playoffs Report – AK Bars– Konstantin Korneev
is playing in the playoffs for the first time, as his team Dynamo was the worst
team in the RSL last year and have since been regulated for their poor showing.
In the off season Korneev signed with AK Bars, a team loaded with an impressive
defensive group, which cut down his ice time by a large amount but gave him some
experienced players to learn from, as half of AK Bars defense has suited up for
the Russian National Team this year, Korneev included. Korneev and AK Bars take
on Metallurg Novokuznetsk who have Habs restricted free agent Vadim Tarasov in
net. So far AK Bars has won the first game, but lost the second game in which
looks to be a tough fought playoff round.

February 2004 – Playing on the fourth pairing, ice time has
been hard to come by, as Korneev continues to play for AK Bars. With the limited
ice time, his production has really dropped, and lately he hasn’t been able to
find his way onto the score sheet.

January 2004 – Playing on the fourth pairing, ice time has
been hard to come by, as Korneev returns to AK Bars after taking part in the
recent U-20 tournament, where he was one of Russia’s top players.

December 2003 – Still isn’t getting much ice time, as he
plays mostly on the 4th pairing, but he did pick up his first goal of
the season recently. Look for him to be one of Russia’s top defensemen in the
upcoming WJC tournament.

November 2003 – After his team from last year was regulated
to the high league, Korneev found himself on the AK Bars squad, after having
interest from several RSL teams for his services. AK Bars is a team with some
very talented players, so ice time is limited for Korneev, who plays mostly on
the 4th pairing, on one of the few teams that carries 4 pairings of
defense. He was named to the Russian Senior National Team recently, a good sign
for the 19 year old, and he has also been named to the Russian Junior National
Team U-20 team.

October 2003 – Is not getting the ice time he had last year,
as he is playing on the 4th pairing for AK Bars, a team that uses 4
pairings of defensemen. Korneev numbers have taken a hit, but this is to be
expected with less ice time.

September 2003 – After switching to a new team over the
summer, Korneev joins AK Bars a team that has a big payroll and some good talent
on defense. Korneev will not see the same amount of icetime he saw last season,
as his team last year was very weak, thus they were moved to the High league. So
far in six games, he has 0 points and 2 penalty minutes. Korneev did start the
year on the top line due to injury for their top defensemen.
