The next group of prospects in our final rankings are ones that Montreal would be unlikely to consider with their first-round selections but if they were to trade down or some of these players drop to the second round, they could garner consideration from the Canadiens.
Throughout this regime’s history and a logical look at the needs of the team, it remains doubtful that the Habs use both picks they currently hold in this round. Montreal owns Picks 41 and 49 in this round at the time of publication. Here are some players that appear poised to be selected in those ranks.
The Habs had some good stretches early and late on Wednesday in Washington but struggled in between that, paving the way for the Capitals to take the game and the series 4-1.
Friday’s third game of the series was certainly an eventful one, featuring plenty of goals, both teams losing their goalies to injury, and even a bench-clearing incident. In the end, the Habs picked up six goals, allowing them to double up Washington by a score of 6-3.
The Habs continued their recent run of coming back in the third period in the series opener against Washington, erasing a two-goal deficit to force overtime. However, barely two minutes in, Alex Ovechkin’s first postseason playoff goal gave the Capitals the win.
Armed with a chance to clinch a playoff spot with a regulation victory on Friday night, the Habs instead came out slow once again and weren’t able to recover, falling 5-2 to Ottawa.
The Habs scored on the opening shift of the game on Friday in Carolina but that was all they could muster up offensively. The Hurricanes controlled most of the game and picked up a comfortable 4-1 win.
The Habs kicked off a four-game road trip in St. Louis on Tuesday and it didn’t get off to a good start. The Blues controlled the play early and never looked back, picking up the 6-1 win.
Tuesday’s game against Ottawa was a back-and-forth affair that saw the Habs trailing twice in the third period. However, they were able to bounce back each time, eventually skating away with the 6-3 victory.
