Corey Locke wins OHL’s MVP Award

For the second year in a row, Ottawa 67’s captain and Montreal Canadiens Draft Pick, Corey Locke, has been named as the recipient of the Red Tilson Trophy as the Ontario Hockey League’s Most Outstanding Player for the 2003-04 season.

Locke scored 51 goals and 67 assists for 118 points in 65 games for the 67’s and led the OHL in scoring for the second consecutive season. He led the League in goals and power play goals and finished third in assists and second in power play assists. He was ninth in game-winning goals with seven.

This marks the second time that a member of the Ottawa 67’s has won the Red Tilson Trophy in back to back seasons, the first being Alyn McCauley in 1996 and in 1997. It also marks the fifth time in nine seasons that an Ottawa 67’s player has won the award. The last OHL player to compile back to back outstanding player seasons was Brad Boyes of the Erie Otters in 2001 and 2002.

Six other 67’s players have won the Red Tilson Trophy: Peter Lee (1976), Bobby Smith (1978), Jim Fox (1980), Andrew Cassels (1988), Alyn McCauley (1996 and 1997), and Brian Campbell (1999).

The Red Tilson Award is the most prestigious award presented by the Ontario Hockey League, going each year to the player that is voted the most outstanding during the regular season by OHL writers and broadcasters

The award is in honour of Albert “Red” Tilson, who was killed in action in Europe during World War II. Tilson was the OHA scoring champion for the 1942-43 season after scoring 19 goals and 38 assists for 57 points in only 22 games with the Oshawa Generals.
