HW 3 Stars – March 2013

A record number of HabsWorld readers submitted their votes for March’s 3
Stars.  Given the almost unanimous nature of the selections made, the
number 1 star should come as a surprise to no one.  Nevertheless, the
following players all received recognition for their play in March: Peter Budaj,
Lars Eller, Alexei Emelin, Brendan Gallagher, Brian Gionta, Jeff Halpern, Andrei
Markov, Max Pacioretty, Tomas Plekanec, Carey Price, Michael Ryder, P.K. Subban
and Jarred Tinordi.

#1 –  P.K. Subban (14 GP – 7 Goals – 11 Assists – 18 Points – Plus
7
Rating)

Subban was named the 2nd star in the NHL for the month of March, so it was
practically a given that he would top the votes here at Habsworld.
Producing points at more than a point-per-game, P.K. led practically every
offensive category (goals, assists, points, plus/minus, powerplay points) and
was solid in his own defensive zone.  Although the thought of a Norris trophy
must have entered his mind (as it has entered many of ours), Subban refuses to
speak of such things, and maintains his team-first attitude.

92% of 1st Star votes, 6% of 2nd Star votes, 7% of 3rd Star votes.

#2 –  Michael Ryder (13 GP – 7 Goals – 7 Assists – 14 Points – Plus
3
Rating)

Although a few may have questioned Marc Bergevin’s decision to reacquire
Michael Ryder, it is likely safe to say that no one doubts the wisdom of the
trade now.  Eric Cole has underperformed in Dallas (4 points in 19 games,
-6 rating), while Ryder has fit seamlessly into Montreal’s roster and
contributed significantly.  Ryder’s performance in March was no exception
to this; he shared the goal-scoring lead with P.K. Subban, and was responsible
at all ends of the rink.  The sole downside to Ryder’s performance is that
it will likely make his next contract too rich for Montreal to afford.

6% of 1st Star votes, 55% of 2nd Star votes, 22% of 3rd Star votes.

#3 –  Brendan Gallagher (14 GP – 5 Goals – 6 Assists – 11 Points –
Minus 1
Rating)

Very few would have predicted that the diminutive rookie would have such an
impact this year, but Gallagher is making his case for the Calder Trophy.
Gallagher’s relentless drive and seeming lack of fear to go to the net are
things that the Canadiens have been lacking for years; despite his smaller
stature, he has been effective in this role.  Moreover, Gallagher seems to
relish the punishment he endures as he makes more and more enemies in the
league.  His play must surely inspire his teammates.

1% of 1st Star votes, 20% of 2nd Star votes, 31% of 3rd Star votes.

HM –  Tomas Plekanec (GP – 5 Goals – 8 Assists – 13 Points – Plus
3
Rating)

Tomas Plekanec may not boast the flashiest numbers every month, but he is a
constant offensive threat and an integral component of Montreal’s defense.
After the acquisition of Jeff Halpern, Plekanec may not be out for as many key
draws, but he still plays tough minutes on the PK and against other teams’ top
lines.  Montreal’s chances of success remain hinged on Plekanec’s health
and his contributions at both ends of the ice.

1% of 1st Star votes, 10% of 2nd Star votes, 17% of 3rd Star votes.

Thanks to all that voted, and we’ll see you next month!
