After being drafted with the New Jersey Devils’ eighth selection (149th overall) in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft, Dowd thrived under the defensive system of Devils’ head coach Jacques Lemaire in the mid-1990s. The center was an important piece of the Devils’ 1995 Stanley Cup team, scoring two goals and dishing out an assist in the playoffs. The Devils traded Dowd to the Vancouver Canucks in 1996, and less than a year later he was picked up off waivers by the New York Islanders. He signed with the Calgary Flames in 1997 and was traded to the Nashville Predators in 1998. But before he played a game for the Predators, Dowd landed with the Edmonton Oilers in the another trade. There he settled in and played 69 games in 1999-00, scoring 23 points (five goals, 18 assists). The Minnesota Wild selected Dowd in the 2000 Expansion Draft. The center notched 13 goals and 30 assists in 82 games for the Wild during the 2001-02 season.
