Amid reports that Vinzenz Rohrer was hoping to stay in Switzerland for the upcoming season, he will get his wish.  The Habs announced Sunday that they’ve loaned the forward to EV Zug for the 2026-27 campaign.

The 21-year-old was drafted in the third round back in 2022, going 75th overall.  At the time, he was playing with Ottawa of the OHL but after spending one more season there, Rohrer decided it was time to turn pro, signing with Zurich in the Swiss NL.

Rohrer spent three seasons there with his second being his best, when he recorded 15 goals and 10 assists in 52 games.  That helped earn him his entry-level deal from the Canadiens, who loaned him back to Zurich after he didn’t make Montreal’s roster out of training camp.  He struggled offensively, however, recording just four goals and eight assists in 41 contests.

Once the Swiss season ended, Rohrer joined Laval.  He picked up two points in their regular season finale and added an assist in five playoff games.  From there, he was off to the Worlds where he played for Austria for the third straight year, recording three goals and an assist in six games.

Rohrer was supposed to play full time in North America this season but teams in Switzerland wound up getting into a bidding war for his services.  Reports last week surfaced that Zug would make Rohrer one of the highest-paid players in the league on a three-year deal, making it much more profitable for him to play over there than in Laval.

While it seemed like the Canadiens might be amenable to loaning him if he didn’t make their roster out of training camp, today’s news means he won’t even get that chance.  Instead, he’ll spend the full season in Switzerland.  If their year ends before Laval’s, the Habs can then reassign him to the Rocket.

With the news, Rohrer joins Bogdan Konyushkov as players playing on loan overseas for the upcoming season.  Both players will count against the 50-contract limit in 2026-27.
