Alex Belzile was in the middle of what was shaping up to be another strong year before a shoulder injury ended his season early. He still did enough to impress the Habs though as they signed him to a one-year extension on Friday. The deal is worth the league minimum $700,000 in the NHL, $225,000 in the AHL, and contains a total guarantee of $250,000. Overall, he gets a raise of $50,000 on his guaranteed money for 2019-20.
The 28-year-old was in his second season with Laval and had 14 points in 20 games before the injury. Had it not been for the injuries, Belzile almost certainly would have had a long look with the Habs with the injuries they had, not to mention the players that were dealt away at the trade deadline.
As things stand, Belzile is likely to return to the Rocket for next season although this time, he’ll have to make it through waivers to do so. However, with no NHL experience under his belt, that seems like a fairly likely outcome. Assuming that happens, he’ll likely be a go-to player for Laval and if he plays like he did since joining them, he should get an opportunity with the Canadiens at some point.
