HW Recap: The cavalry gets it done

Despite numerous injuries, the Habs managed to pull off a trio of victories this week, moving them to 6th in the Eastern Conference. Losing so many players didn't deter the Hamilton Bulldogs any, as they just continue to steamroll the AHL. It's never too early to start scoreboard watching which means the Schedule Synopsis makes an early return this year, while the Final Thought looks at a new consideration in the Price/Halak debate. This plus the weekly power ranks, in the Recap.Full Story

On Monday, the Habs announced that GM Bob Gainey is stepping down effective immediately as General Manager of the Montreal Canadiens. He will be replaced by assistant GM Pierre Gauthier. The team has called a press conference for 4 PM EST this afternoon to further discuss the situation. A live chat will be taking place on the HW forums.Full Story

HW 3 Stars: Habs can't solve Rask

This afternoon's game vs Boston is one of the rare instances where the Habs actually outscored their opponent and still lost. Of the Bruins' 3 goals in their shutout over the Habs, 2 were deflected in by Montreal players. The Habs fought hard for most of the way but were unable to solve Tuukka Rask in this one. Scoring for the B's were Adam McQuaid and Marco Sturm who had a pair.Full Story

HW 3 Stars: A+ effort in beating Pens

With 6 regulars from the Hamilton Bulldogs in the lineup and facing the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins, things looked dim for the Habs. However, looks can be deceiving as Montreal put forth a strong effort en route to a stunning 5-3 victory. Brian Gionta had a pair while Tomas Plekanec, Scott Gomez, and Mathieu Darche each had a goal while Pascal Dupuis, Bill Guerin, and Evgeni Malkin replied for the Penguins.Full Story

Preview: Pittsburgh at Montreal - February 6th, 2010

The fourth and final game of the season series between the Montreal Canadiens and the Pittsburgh Penguins concludes Saturday afternoon, as the two teams meet for the first time since December 10th. The Penguins won that game 3-2, and have won the other two games, 6-1 and 3-1, to remain unbeaten against the Habs this season. Montreal is coming off 2 wins over Vancouver and Boston, where they managed victories despite being thoroughly outshot and outplayed for significant chunks of time. Pittsburgh is also on a 2-game winning streak, having most recently beaten the Buffalo Sabres, 5-4, on February 1st. The Canadiens are 4-4-2 over their last 10 games while the Penguins are 7-3-0.Full Story

HW 3 Stars: Halak shines again

On Thursday night, the Habs once again came out flat, spotting the Boston Bruins an 2-0 lead. However, a pair of goals in less than a minute late in the second was enough to get the game to a shootout where Brian Gionta's goal in the 3rd round proved to be the difference maker in a 3-2 Montreal victory. Glen Metropolit and Roman Hamrlik scored for the Habs while Mark Recchi and Blake Wheeler replied for the Bruins.Full Story

Bulldogs Weekly Recap (Jan 27-31)

The Sandman has returned.

Is that Commissioner Gordon calling Batman on the batphone, warning the Caped Crusader that an arch-villain has once again returned to Gotham City, just as it always happened on the old Batman television show that I used to watch as a kid? No. In this case, The Sandman refers to the nickname of Hamilton Bulldogs goaltender Curtis Sanford.Full Story

HW Recap: Offence MIA

This past week for the Habs could simply be summed up in song, "Where has all the offence gone?" (you can figure out the tune yourself). Fortunately, the same can't be said for Hamilton, as they had plenty of firepower en route to a 4-game winning streak. We go 3 Up, 3 Down in assessing whether it's time to consider moving Andrei Markov, while the Final Thought tries to examine why almost every callup from Hamilton has struggled. This, plus the power rankings, in the Recap.Full Story

HW 3 Stars: Habs' comeback falls short in Ottawa

The powerplay was the saving grace for the Habs on Saturday afternoon, as a pair of goals earned them a point that they really didn't deserve otherwise in a 3-2 overtime loss to Ottawa. Brian Gionta's goal with less than 3 minutes left in the 3rd took it to OT where Mike Fisher scored the winner on a rare 3-on-3 opportunity. Benoit Pouliot had Montreal's other goal while Jason Spezza and former Hab Alexei Kovalev also scored for Ottawa.Full Story

Preview: Montreal at Ottawa - January 30th, 2010

The slumping Montreal Canadiens visit the red-hot Ottawa Senators on Saturday afternoon for CBC's Hockey Day in Canada. The Canadiens lost both games on a dismal road trip to Florida and Tampa Bay, recording only a single goal. Conversely, the Sens are a team headed in a completely different direction; they matched a franchise record with their 8th consecutive win on Thursday night. It will be up to the Canadiens to play spoilers, but Ottawa owns the season series thus far this year, winning 3 of the 4 games. Ottawa is an impressive 8-2-0 over their last 10 games while Montreal is a mediocre 4-4-2.Full Story
