HabsWorld.net --

The Habs’ third signing in free agency saw them scour the international
waters.  The club announced they have signed 22 year old forward Jiri Sekac
to a two year, entry level contract.  Financial terms were not disclosed
but given the amount of suitors for him, a max base salary and high performance
bonuses seem likely.

Sekac has spent the past two seasons with Lev Praha of the KHL.  In
2012-13, he barely played, recording just one assist in 26 games.  That
changed this past year though, as his ice time nearly tripled.  In 47
games, he had 11 goals and 17 assists with 18 PIMS, a +12 rating, and 81 shots
on goal while averaging 13:52 per game in ice time.  He also saw big
minutes in the postseason.  Though he recorded just a single goal with
seven helpers in 21 postseason contests (his team lost in seven games in the
league finals) , his ice time jumped significantly again, up to 17:27 per game.

The 6’0, 174 lb left winger will likely be starting the season with the
Canadiens.  His agent acknowledged early in the process that Sekac would be
seeking the best fit and with as many as half the teams in the NHL reportedly
showing interest, I’m sure many of them were guaranteeing NHL ice time to start.
This will not be Sekac’s first foray into playing in North America though.
In 2009-10, he spent some time with Peterborough of the OHL and Youngstown of
the USHL.

Scouting Report:

"One of main knocks on Sekac is that he is an unorthodox-looking skater.
Although he is not a physical player and could stand to be a little harder on
the puck, he has shown a greatly improved "compete level" from the time when he
a bust in Peterborough. Sekac is a stronger and more confident player than he
was then. He has also developed his two-way game."
