Preview: Capitals @ Canadiens

The Canadiens play the Capitals tonight for the second time in 8 days.  Last Friday, Montreal held on for a 3-2 win at the Verizon Center in Washington and held Alexander Ovechkin pointless for only the 4th time this season.  Ovechkin has amassed 10 goals and 10 assists all time versus the Habs but has not scored a goal in his last three visits to the Bell Centre.

Intensity was present in yesterday's practice as Mike Cammalleri and Josh Gorges almost sparred off before being broken up by teammates and coaching staff.  Nothing serious happened though as both players led the post-practice stretch and joked with the media afterwards.  Gorges said it had something to do with a fat joke which few believe as Guillaume Latendresse was already traded earlier in the week.

The injury bug has hampered both the Caps and Habs this year, but Montreal may be getting Jaroslav Spacek back this evening which would be a very good thing as last Friday, Spacek and Roman Hamrlik were the two defenseman primarily looking after Ovechkin. Andrei Kostitsyn is day to day but it is highly unlikely he will play tonight.

Semyon Varlamov and Carey Price are the expected starters tonight and both are playing some good hockey for their respective clubs. Varlamov will be fresh off his first career “regular season” shutout.  Varlamov has also allowed two goals or less in five of his last six starts and has just one regulation loss this year.  Price will be starting his eighth straight and has averaged over 34 saves in that span. Price is 1-0-2 all time against the Capitals.

Fun Fact

1. The Caps have not lost in regulation this season when Ovechkin has scored.
