Roland Melanson - Assistant CoachBorn in Moncton, New Brunswick on June 28, 1960, Roland Melanson is entering his ninth season as an Assistant Coach with the Montreal Canadiens. His duties also include the supervision and the development of all goaltenders in the organization. His dedication and work ethic earned him an excellent reputation throughout the NHL. Prior to joining the Canadiens on June 10, 1997, Melanson was a goaltending coach for the QMJHL Moncton Wildcats from 1995 et 1997, following a 2-year association with the St. John Flames of the American Hockey League, as goaltending consultant (1993 to 1995). Melanson played his junior career with Windsor and Oshawa in the OHL, from 1977 to 1980, being named to the OMJHL Second All-Star Team in 1979. That same year, he was drafted in the 3rd round, 59th overall by the New York Islanders. The first goaltender born in New Brunswick to play in the NHL, Melanson spent 12 years in the NHL. He made impressive debuts with the Islanders as a rookie in 1980-81, posting an official 8-1-1 record in his first 11 games. Melanson played 136 regular season games with the Islanders between 1980 and 1985, where he contributed to three consecutive Stanley Cup championships in 1981, 1982 and 1983. He registered 24 victories in 44 games during the 1982-83 season, sharing the William Jennings Trophy with Billy Smith. He was also named to the NHL Second All-Star Team that year. Following stints in Minnesota, Los Angeles and New Jersey, Melanson was traded to the Montreal Canadiens on September 20, 1991 with Kirk Muller, in return for Stéphane Richer and Tom Chorske. He played only nine games with the Canadiens during the 1991-92 season, as he missed the majority of the season recovering from a groin injury. He put an end to his playing career after the 1993-1994 after being part of seven games with the Saint John Flames, of the AHL.
