HabsWorld.net --

The infirmary to start the season is getting a little smaller as the Habs announced on Thursday that they have placed defenceman Gustav Olofsson on waivers.  This comes on the heels of suffering a shoulder injury at the beginning of training camp.

The Canadiens acquired Olofsson a year ago today in exchange for prospect Will Bitten but have little to show for the move so far.  He sustained a season-ending shoulder injury in just his second game with Laval last season (which came after the shoulder injury he had in training camp with Minnesota).  And in case you haven’t quite caught his tendency to have shoulder problems yet, he missed nearly all of 2014-15 and part of 2015-16 with shoulder issues as well.

Despite the history, the Habs opted to give him another contract for this season in the hopes that he can stay healthy and be a contributor.  He’s not that far removed from battling for a regular spot on Minnesota’s back end (coincidentally with Mike Reilly who’s now with the Habs) as he played in 41 games with the Wild in 2017-18.

Considering the fact that he cleared waivers a year ago and has hardly played since then, it’s likely that Olofsson will once again go unclaimed.  He’ll then be assigned to Laval where he’ll likely play an important role on a new-look back end that will also feature Otto Leskinen and Josh Brook to start the season.
