On Monday, the Hamilton Bulldogs added a defenceman to their currently weakened corps in Dan Focht. Focht is a former 1st round pick of the Phoenix Coyotes, but really has yet to make it as an NHL’er. At 6’6 and 240 lbs, he is the biggest player on the team, and the second heaviest behind resident tough guy Raitis Ivanans.
The scouting report on him is that he is a punishing defender, similar to the currently injured Mike Komisarek. However, he has limited offensive abilities, and can sometimes be weak in his own zone, as his -23 NHL rating last season would attest to.
Last year, Focht primarily spent the season with the Pittsburgh Penguins (which explains the low +/-), amassing 5 points (2-3-5) in 52 games, along with 105 PIMS. In his NHL career, split between the Pens and Coyotes, he has appeared in 82 contests, notching 8 points (2-6-8), plus 145 PIMS and an overall -32 rating.
To answer a few potential questions…he is under an AHL-only contract, he has not signed with the Habs, at least for the time being…he will wear #44 with the Bulldogs…it is not yet known whether he’ll suit up for this weekend’s games, or whether he’ll need some seasoning first.
