HW 2004 Mid-Season Scouting Report

He makes most fans trade lists and if he’s not on those he’s the guy whose contract most can’t wait to expire. Shame they can’t see past size and look at the little things he brings. Defensively he’s a consistent player who brings the same game night in and night out. He takes his man, is rarely beaten, and though he’s on the smaller side, wins board battles significantly more often than most.

Offensively while not a goal scorer, he’s got a gift that so few have – he can hold that puck along the boards by himself for an eternity. His intensity level in those situations is second-to-none. That simple play is such a momentum shifter, such a time-draining move on the penalty kill, such a back-breaking play when the other team is desperate. He also cycles the puck very well and is a good passer. As for the PK itself, there are few I’d rather have out there.

Consistency has been his catch word this year and it’s so nice to know that no matter what the rest of the team is doing, Dax will be doing his same thing as usual. He’s bought into the system, and plays the team game and I think if there’s one player we resign next year, it’ll be Dax for all the little things he brings – as well as his overall game.

Andreas Dackell was drafted 136th overall in the 1996 Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators. That season, he made his NHL debut on October 5 with a goal against the Canadiens’ Jocelyn Thibault. He played 79 games as a rookie and scored 31 points. He also helped the Senators improve 36 points to make the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. In 1997-98, Andreas played all 82 games and improved to 15 goals and 33 points. He won the Senators’ Molson Cup award for three-star selections in February. In the playoffs, he helped the Senators reach the second round. In 1998-99, Andreas scored 15 goals and 50 points as the team improved 20 points to win the Northeast Division title. In 1999-2000, Andreas played all 82 games and picked up 35 points. In 2000-01, Andreas led the Senators to their second Northeast Division title in three years with a club record 48 wins and 109 points. Andreas had 13 goals and 31 points.

At the 2001 Entry Draft on June 24, Andreas was traded to the Montréal Canadiens for a seventh-round draft pick.
